So glad that you're back! Now I know what I can look forward to with my son. I've already built his first bike ramp, and I'm sure I'll be the mom who drops him off in his raft. One of the main jobs as a parent is to allow your child to be young and stupid. Otherwise, they end up being old and stupid, and that's just not cool...

Awesome story, BH....but there is one detail in there that went by too fast and could have used some elaboration...."by the way...my mother...drove us to the park where we put the raft in the water".... I think it is cool that she did that. In doing so, she demonstrated her ability to hold on to you (while you were balancing the nexus between teen hood and adulthood) and allow you to proceed, with what was proven to be, a very silly, an potentially unsafe, idea. My money is on the probable fact that she drove the whole route in an attempt to keep you in her sights (and out of harm's way).... Nicely done, Eleanor....

Now if only she had been there on the turnpike. I cannot believe you are married to me, the most cautious person either one of us knows....(so boring am I....)

Glad you liked the story. I've tried, looking at street pics of Nashville today, to figure out where Linebaugh's was exactly but it's hard to visualize. All I know is that it was quite close to the Ryman, hence all the country performers that ate there. Although my family's based in the north, my cousin lives in Nashville and if I ever get down that way I'd love to walk the city again but, from the pictures I've seen, it is a very different place than what I remember.

Awesome story! I currently live in Nashville but am a "yankee" by birth. I'm also a Hartford fan and have always wondered where Linebaugh's was once located. I was just looking at a book called Bluegrass Odyssey and there is a picture inside Linebaugh's that someone took of Bill Monroe eating pie and drinking coffee before going over to play the Opry. Check it out!

Well, it was weird. We watched it go up and come down and never found it...just the ripped apart base sitting on the grass. What else was there to think??? I knew we should have attached those heat shields!

When you have your first batch of bumper stickers hot off the press, let me know, and I'll send you some cash. Excellent article, my friend, and so true.

I came down with a case of hives after 9/11 which lasted for several grueling days of itching, lotioning, and even bandaging (which is obviously NOTHING compared to the suffering that came to those actually at ground zero). I can't help but think that I was lulled into a false sense of security, hence my extreme reaction to trauma. The events that occurred on 9/11 were unlike anything my generation had ever experienced, and I believe that my peers and I were completely unprepared to "deal".

Thanks Martin. Being the freakishly ambivalent daughter of a very complicated man, I appreciated this a great deal. My daughter is one of the lucky ones on the receiving end of wise and wonderful love from a man that valued his role. Ellen
